Carolina Institute for Battery Innovation (CIBI)

Collaboration between the University of South Carolina and Fraunhofer USA

Based at the University of South Carolina, this institute is dedicated to advancing battery technology through integrated research, education, and manufacturing. Fraunhofer USA serves as a core project partner in CIBI, contributing international expertise to strengthen global collaboration and innovation. The institute focuses on advancements across all scales, from nanoscale materials and cell-level design to grid-scale energy storage systems. Its research priorities include improving energy density, extending battery lifespan, enhancing safety, and advancing multi-scale simulations and recyclability of battery systems. In addition, the institute provides comprehensive educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate (PhD) levels and supports the South Carolina Technical College System in training the next generation of the battery workforce.

International role of the Competence Center

The Fraunhofer Competence Center for Battery Cell Production sees itself not only as a national contact point, but also as a bridge to the international battery industry.

  • North America is a particular focus here: we support companies in setting up production capacities, develop joint pilot projects and transfer innovative technologies from Europe to the North American market.
  • Through this cooperation, we promote the transatlantic exchange of knowledge, accelerate the market ramp-up of sustainable cell technologies and create synergies between European and US partners.

The Competence Center is thus positioning itself as a global platform for cooperation - with Münster at the heart of industrialization.

Our Partner

  • Fraunhofer IPT (Aachen): Specializes in pilot lines, special machine construction and the scaling of cell innovations (e.g. solid-state cells).

Competence Center for Battery Cell Production

Battery cell production lies at the heart of the energy and mobility transition. The Fraunhofer Competence Centre for Battery Cell Production brings together the expertise of Fraunhofer IPT and Fraunhofer FFB to promote the sustainable industrialisation of battery cells in collaboration with industry and government. The focus is on Fraunhofer FFB in Münster, with the support of partner institutes Fraunhofer IPT and the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance, who contribute a wide range of expertise
