Scientist- Vaccine Design & Formulation Development

Job Summary:

A position is open for a Scientist to head a vaccine design and formulation development effort at the Fraunhofer USA Center for Molecular Biotechnology CMB.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Head a group focused on the development of thermostable formulations for vaccines and therapeutics, including the development of new technologies and the advancement of specific product candidates, and assume responsibility for achieving long and short-term project and program milestones.
  • Provide leadership for the group, including direction setting, decision making, delegation, motivation and mentoring, and in developing technical capabilities.
  • Provide creative intellectual input into advancing the Center’s efforts on vaccine design and formulation development, including the design of protein targets, adjuvant design, and approaches to stabilize formulations.
  • Lead grant writing efforts in the field of vaccine design and formulation development, and assist in other aspects of business development to secure grants and contracts in this field
  • Survey and analyze the intellectual property landscape in the field of vaccine design and formulation development as it relates to the Center’s proposed activities.
  • Take the lead on preparing project reports, presentations, publications, and patent applications in the field of vaccine design and formulation development.
  • Participate in and provide input into the scientific leadership team at the Center.

Experience in the following areas is preferred:

  • Expression, purification and characterization of recombinant proteins, and standard protein analytical methods.
  • Lipid biochemistry as it applies to adjuvant development. Stabilization of proteins in formulations.
  • Drying technologies such as lyophilization and spray drying.

Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree or equivalent experience in pharmaceutical formulations, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology or another relevant field.
  • Solid understanding of molecular engineering, formulation development, protein biochemistry, protein analytical techniques, and lipid biochemistry.
  • Track record of positive prior supervisory experience.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Highly self-motivated, and able to work in a diverse, fast-paced laboratory environment.

Research Laboratory Technician

Open position for a Laboratory Technician to join Fraunhofer USA’s Center for Molecular Biotechnology.

The successful candidate will assist scientists to discover and characterize novel agents for prevention of bacterial infections. Primary responsibilities include preparation of bacterial cultures, filtration, extraction and routine microbiological testing.

Responsibilities require:

•Understanding of basic microbiology

•Strong calculation skills.

•Strong understanding of media preparation.

•Excellent organizational and communication skills.

•Meticulous attention to detail.

•Ability to lift and transport up to 50 lbs.

Research Assistant - Protein Biochemistry

Job Summary:

A position is open for a Research Assistant to join the Protein Biochemistry group at Fraunhofer USA’s Center for Molecular Biotechnology.

Principal Responsibilities:

·         Prepare and maintain buffer, reagent & media supplies.

·         Perform molecular biology work: DNA/RNA sample extraction/purification, perform PCR, bacterial transformation, aseptic handling of samples.

·         Conduct purification of recombinant proteins, including chromatographic method development.

·         Conduct characterization of proteins using standard biochemical and biophysical techniques.

·         Operate and maintain basic lab equipment (e.g. balances, pH meters, stir plates, etc.).

·         Maintain routine laboratory records.

·         Perform other duties as assigned including, but not limited to: inventory, order & restocking of supplies, laboratory organization, cleanliness, and safety.

·         Plan, execute, analyze research work independently.

·         Provide input and participate in group meetings.

Experience in one or more of the follow areas is preferred:

·         Operation of AKTA FPLC systems

·         Operation of Waters or Agilent HPLC systems

·         Experience with standard protein analytical methods (UV-VIS, SDS-PAGE, Western blot)

·         Experience in standard molecular biology methods (agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR, UV-VIS) is desired.

Requirements:

Project Manager

 

A Project Manager position in biotechnology is available immediately in Delaware. The organization is focused primarily on preclinical and early stage clinical development of vaccines and therapeutics and on the development of diagnostics. 

The successful candidate will coordinate and manage projects on applied research and product development. 

The responsibilities of the position include:

• Facilitating open and comprehensive communication among staff in diverse functional groups and with partners, contractors and customers.

• Ensuring appropriate research agreements, confidentiality agreements and material transfer agreements are put in place.

• Coordinating and scheduling project related meetings and activities.

• Assisting with the shipping and receipt of project materials.

• Writing meeting summaries and assisting with project reports.

• Creating project timelines and tracking project budgets.

• Managing resources across multiple projects.

• Assisting in the preparation of grant and business proposals.

Job Requirements:

• Applicants should be highly motivated.

• Possess a higher degree in the biological sciences (preferably with at least one year’s experience in project management), or a bachelor’s degree (preferably with at least two years’ experience in project management).

• Experience in managing projects in the areas of vaccines and/or therapeutics, ideally in an industrial setting is preferred.

• Experience of managing projects through clinical trials is an advantage. 

• Ability to work very well in a team environment, have excellent communication and organizational skills and pay close attention to detail.

• Ability to work in a diverse environment.

Research Assistant/Associate-Peptide Chemistry

Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Assistant/Research Associate with hands-on experience in characterization of antimicrobial compounds (peptides) derived from natural sources. Our offices are based in the Delaware Technology Park adjacent to the University of Delaware. We offer competitive compensation including salary, benefits and comprehensive health plan coverage.

Responsibilities:

This position will specialize in characterization of natural antimicrobial compounds (peptides) to support discovery of novel antibiotics. Essential roles and responsibilities for this position are:

Develop methodologies for purification of antimicrobial compounds from bacterial cultures. 

Perform peptide analysis using MALDI-MS, LC-MS, HPLC, TLC, -UV-Vis, and NMR

Maintain excellent records of laboratory activities and communicate experimental results to the Project Team.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in biochemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology or closely related field with 3+ years of applicable experience.

Experience with natural products processing (filtration, rotary evaporation, freeze-drying) and purification of peptides from bacterial cultures using HPLC

Working knowledge of advanced LC-MS systems (Aquity Qda) and software (Empower and MassLynx)

Hands-on experience with analysis and characterization of novel natural peptides using HPLC, Mass Spectroscopy and NMR.

Ability to complete tasks under tight deadlines and work closely with cross-functional teams in the progression of development programs.

Motivated, self-directed, and work well with little oversight.

Flexible; able to work on several projects simultaneously.

Excellent computer skills including instrumentation specific software and proficiency in Microsoft Office

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Practical knowledge of de novo peptide sequencing using tandem mass spectrometry

Experience in the pharmaceutical industry working in Discovery R&D.
