Fraunhofer HHI’s outstanding achievements include recent world records for serial data transmission speed (10.2 Tb/s) and via visible light LED (800 Mb/s), as well as the Emmy Award-winning industry standard for video coding, H.264/MPEG-4.

The Institute also plays a leading role in other technology areas such as immersive display technologies, 3D image processing, gesture-controlled systems, photonic components, and fiber optic sensors and sensor systems.

Business Areas

Medical Technology
HHI’s medical technology research includes solutions for hands-free control of operating theatre devices, automatic image and video recognition for diagnostic support, autostereoscopic 3D displays, and new communication systems and sensor network systems.

Security Technology
HHI’s civil and military security technology developments are primarily concerned with the detection of explosives and biomolecules using a variety of sensor methods, including terahertz technologies and photoacoustic or evanescent field sensors. This is complemented by biometric identity control via 3D video and electronic image processing.

Energy Technology
HHI’s fiber optic sensor technology can be utilized for a wide range of applications, including condition monitoring of wind power plants, sails, power cables and structures as well as enhancing energy efficiency of battery systems or geothermal power plants.
