Experimental Psychology/ Market Research Internship

 

About the position:

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for an intern to join its Building Energy Efficiency Group. This is an opportunity to carry out R&D in a new Fraunhofer center on a combination of external and internal projects. Specifically, we are looking for an intern to work with our Behavioral Scientist on issues related to home occupants’ interaction with energy-saving technology.

Principal Responsibilities:

·       Work with the experimental psychologist and engineers on projects investigating how peoples’ behaviors affect home energy consumption and ways to modify their behaviors.

·       Help design surveys, as well as laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of different types of energy-use feedback devices from a human factors perspective.

  • Perform a variety of R&D projects related to PV modules.

About The Position

Increasing penetration of grid-connected renewable energy technologies offers potential for significant reductions in primary energy consumption and carbon emissions.  However managing the impact of these technologies on the distribution grid is a challenge.  Fraunhofer CSE is investigating issues around grid integration of renewable energy sources.

Principal Responsibilities

·        Together with partners, measure, monitor, and model the impact to the electric power grid of a variety of renewable and clean energy technologies, including photovoltaics, wind, energy storage, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)

·        Specify, install , and operate field monitoring hardware

·        Analyze field data for power quality issues and system stability

·        Develop models (both quantitative and phenomenological) to understand the grid impacts of renewables

Required Experience and Education:

·        BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline, with an emphasis on Electric Power Systems

·        Familiar with grid interconnection standards and grid protection schemes

·        Experience with power quality measurement and instrumentation

About the Positions:

To succeed, the renewable energy industry needs talented, experienced researchers. To this end, the Fraunhofer CSE offers robust programs for interns and visiting scientists interested in gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge cleantech research.  

Internships

CSE interns work with engineers and scientists to perform hands-on research and development activities. Internship positions typically last for 6 months, but longer or shorter internships can also be accommodated. During this time, they will be supervised by experienced Center personnel and trained to operate and maintain the CSE's lab equipment, participating in active projects while carrying out independent research projects as time allows. Interns receive limited compensation for their time at CSE, and have full access to the Center's resources during their stay. For international students, housing can also be provided. 

PhD Studentships

The CSE is also interested in working with students who have already been accepted for admission to PhD position at a recognized university or are currently finishing their doctorates. At the CSE, doctoral students can gain practical experience while conducting the lab work required for their thesis or dissertations. As with internships, studentships are compensated on a monthly basis.   

Postdoctoral Researchers

Process Improvement Specialist

The Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering, Maryland is seeking qualified professionals to join our technical staff. Qualified candidates will support and/or manage customer-oriented process improvement projects. Activities may include:

  • Organizational change assistance such as educating and coaching executives, senior management, process improvement staff, and practitioners and planning and implementing improvement projects.

  • Process definition and modeling such as providing model interpretations (e.g., CMMI, ISO, and Lean Six Sigma), applying models to a specific context, defining organizational-specific policies, procedures, guidelines, and project tailoring processes.

  • Training program implementation such as designing training materials, coordinating and implementing programs, and facilitating experience sharing among participating organizations.  

  • Appraisal support such as designing, conducting, leading, and participating in various types of appraisals, such as gap analyses, readiness reviews, internal assessments, validation audits and formal appraisals.

  • Outreach and Customer services such as interacting with organizational partners, including high technology councils, universities, and other business groups, establishing and fostering customer relationships, and publishing improvement experiences in appropriate journals and conferences.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will have at least five (5) years of software development-related experience, knowledge and familiarity with software process improvement and business re-engineering methods and models. Experience in both government and commercial sectors is desired. Successful candidates will have strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to deal with external customers, including high level executives, and an interest in assisting organizations in improving their business. Willingness to commute to various customer sites within the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area, as needed. Minimum Bachelor degree in applicable discipline required.
