About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Building Technology Program Manager to join its Building Energy Efficiency Group. This is an opportunity to work with and have a major impact in one of the world's leading applied research groups, including our partners at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP), working with a wide variety of clients. Fraunhofer CSE leads a Building America Team research team (U.S. Department of Energy).
Principal Responsibilities:
• Establish and expand multi-million, multi-year building energy efficiency research programs with strategic government and industry partners
• Effectively manage strategic interdisciplinary research programs
• Proactively reach out to and cultivate relationships with a wide range of stakeholders throughout the buildings industry
• Manage technical research projects in collaboration with a team of outstanding and enthusiastic researchers
Required Experience and Education:
• Proven track record developing strategic relationships and programs
• Five or more years experience managing research projects in a buildings-related industry
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant technical discipline, Masters degree preferred
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Good understanding of commercial and government R&D contracts and accounting practices
• Goal-driven personality, with great attention to detail

Residential Energy Management Lead

About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for a Residential Energy Management Lead to join its Building Energy Efficiency Group. We believe that there are many opportunities to take advantage of long-term trends for in-home sensing, computation, and communications and emerging “smart grid” infrastructure to enable widespread deployment of residential energy management approaches. We are looking for talented and systems-level engineer or scientist to lead interdisciplinary projects to develop, model, test, and evaluate energy-saving residential energy management technologies and solutions for a wide variety of clients, including the DOE Building America Program. You'll be a key part of a dynamic team that shares a commitment to engineering excellence, combined with an excitement about sustainable energy technology.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Lead the Residential Energy Management activity, working with an interdisciplinary research team
• Refine and expand the vision and research focus for the Residential Energy Management activity
• Identify personnel and laboratory capabilities required to carry out priority research activities
• Develop novel residential energy management approaches
• Interface with government and industry clients, create compelling proposals and serve as Principal Investigator on projects
• Present findings of research at relevant conferences and industry events
• Compose technical papers and final reports
Required Experience and Education:
• Demonstrated excellence in performing systems-level experimental research and development in a relevant field
• Track record of obtaining funding for research from industry and government in a relevant field
• Experience leading relevant projects involving inter-disciplinary teams
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
• Publication track record in a relevant field
• Familiarity with residential energy-consuming systems and sensing technologies
• Experience with in-home testing or energy monitoring highly preferred
• Experience evaluating the acceptance of residential technologies preferred
• Masters Degree (Ph.D. Preferred) in a relevant field, such as Systems, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Human Factors, etc.

• Lead the effort to obtain industrial and government projects to develop high-performance HVAC and solar-thermal systems
• Design, model/simulate, and evaluate novel HVAC and solar-thermal systems
• Design and lead laboratory and field test experiments to evaluate the energy performance of HVAC and solar-thermal technologies
• Develop novel HVAC and solar thermal concepts for low-energy buildings
• Work with the building energy efficiency team to assess the performance of HVAC and solar-thermal systems in a whole-building context
• Present findings of studies at relevant conferences and industry events
• Compose final reports and technical papers
Required Experience and Education:
• Demonstrated excellence in performing experimental research and development in the field of thermal science and HVAC
• Experience modeling and simulating HVAC and solar thermal system performance
• Laboratory or field testing of HVAC and/or solar-thermal systems
• Prior research in controls and/or diagnostics preferred
• Track record of obtaining funding from industry and government for research and development in relevant fields
• Excellent interpersonal and written skills including publications on HVAC and/or solar thermal research
• 10+ years experience or Ph.D. in Architectural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.

About the Position:
The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for an Electrical Engineer to lead projects in the Building Energy Efficiency and Distributed Energy Systems Groups. We seek a talented electrical engineer with a strong background in power electronics to lead projects to develop, model, test, and evaluate energy-saving electronics and system solutions for building equipment and systems. The work will also include simulation and experimentation to evaluate the impact of PV installations on the distribution grid. You'll be a key part of a dynamic team that shares a commitment to engineering excellence, combined with an excitement about sustainable energy technology.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Be the resident expert in power electronics for the Building Energy Efficiency and Distributed Energy Systems groups
• Analyze and evaluate the energy savings potential of existing and emerging power electronics technologies for residential devices using a combination of modeling and laboratory testing
• Develop and carry out tests to evaluate the energy savings potential of novel residential energy management technologies (e.g. home automation, smart thermostats, diagnostics, etc.)
• Simulate electrical distribution and micro grids with software tools like Power Factory to analyze the grid impact of PV installations
• Lead projects with commercial and government clients
• Present findings of research at relevant conferences and industry events
• Compose technical papers and final reports
Experience and Education:
The ideal candidate will have the following education, and relevant experience in several of the areas listed:
• Strong background in power electronics for a wide range of power from mW to kW, for a broad range of technologies
• Significant experience with experimental and simulation methodologies, as well as the efficient combination of both
• Experience with measuring and modeling energy consumption of power electronics technologies
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art power saving technologies
• Experience analyzing residential electric devices and/or systems, such as appliance and consumer electronics, ideally with in-home testing
• Understanding of low and medium voltage distribution grids
• Experience with grid simulation tools, e.g., Power Factory
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
• Experience leading projects highly preferred
• Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) with 5 years or Bachelor’s Degree in EE with at least 10 years relevant experience
